Coach John Marshall: A batter becomes a baserunner when the ball is hit, or goes into play. Baserunning begins as soon as the batter leaves the batter's box. For a right-handed batter, after he swings the bat, he should get rid of the bat right away, and his first step should be with his back foot. Push off of your left leg, and your first step towards first base should be with your back leg – or your right leg – and then on towards first base.

For the left-handed batter, after the left-handed batter swings, just like the righty, should get rid of the bat and his first step should be with his back leg. If you'll notice, my back leg swings over my front leg, and down towards first base. That will get me out of the box as fast as possible.
