Coach Bill Sacco: That’s a five-second violation. Tyler, in blue, had the basketball, picked up his dribble. Alex was closely guarding him – closely guarded is within six feet – so Alex was clearly within six feet, once I see that, as an official, I start a five-second count. Alex maintained his legal guarding position for five seconds, blew the whistle, we have a five-second violation. Alex’s team would get the ball, out-of-bounds, closest to the spot where the violation occurred.

This also could have happened if Tyler was dribbling and Alex did the same thing, closely guarded him for five seconds. I again would start a five-second count, call violation, and Alex’s team gets the ball at the spot closest to the violation.
