Coach Bill Thom: All right, in this segment we're going to work on the righty layup. One of the things I think that you should be aware of is that a lot of drills I do with campers, I take the ball out of the drill. We want to go very slowly, we want the student, the athlete, to really get the footwork down – what we're trying to teach – and not worry about if the ball is going in the basket or not. A great way to do this is by removing the ball out of the drill, and working just on footwork and technique.

We're going to put Shaun in a shooting position, right angle in the elbow, right angle in the wrist. If the ball was here, it would be on the pads of his fingers. There would be space between the ball and his palm, three fingers is what we use to measure. We should be able to put three fingers in there, or he should be able to take his other hand and put three fingers in there, to make sure there's space and the ball is not resting on his palm.

So, what we're going to do is we're going to work on a righty layup. We're going to start very slowly. We would work by taking a right foot step, then a left foot step, and then we're thinking about high jumping – we're thinking about getting off the floor. We're going to start to bring his knee up, and imagine a puppet – the elbow and the knee are attached by a string – as the elbow straightens out, the knee continues up. He's going to shoot the ball overhand method, and follow through to the basket. We do not encourage the use of finger rolls, I think it's just more confusing for the student – the ball becomes a spin and it's just a harder shot.

We teach my high school players, college players that I work with the overhand layup. They have a choice, they can either use the layup or they can dunk the ball. In your case, you have just one choice because I'm sure your young people are not going to be able to dunk the ball, so we're going to work on layups.

So, let's go back and walk through it. Let's go right foot, ball up, left foot, and extend and shoot, all right? Hold that knee up, Shaun, when you finish. Let's come back. Let's go right foot, left foot, and up and shoot and hold it there, and then he'd come down. One more time, we're going step right, left, and then up.
