Matt Ward, a three-time All-American at the University of Virginia, was Major League Lacrosse's Rookie of the Year with the Baltimore (now Washington) Bayhawks in 2006.

At Virginia, Ward led the Cavaliers to the 2003 and 2006 NCAA men's lacrosse championships. As a senior, he won the Tewaaraton Trophy, an award given to the top American college lacrosse player.

During high school, Ward played at national powerhouse Landon School in surburban Washington, D.C. Ward led the Landon Bears to two straight national championships (the No. 1 rankings in the country by Inside Lacrosse and LaxPower) in 2001 and 2002, and was named Washington Post All-Metro Player of the Year in both years, making him the first player to accomplish the feat.
