Dennis Hill: Something else that a defensive player must be able to do, is make a solid angle tackle, because obviously in football, not every tackle that you make is going to be with the running back running directly at you. In this very simple drill, we will set up an angle tackling situation. Jake will be playing the defensive player. When Joe, the ball carrier, moves down the line, at an angle to Jake, Jake will adjust his body position, so that he can cover the ground, shortening the angle, making the tackle by putting his head in front of the ball carrier’s body, putting his face mask on the ball, remembering to bull his neck, keeping his face up, he'll grab Joe, grab cloth and he'll grab Joe to the ground.

Good, one more time, Jake get a little lower, get your head across the body a little bit more, OK? Ready, there you go. So remember, Jake recognizing the angle of pursuit will step in front of Joe, making sure that he puts his head in front of the ball carrier, not behind and that he does exactly what we taught them before, he bulls his neck, he grabs cloth and he drives Joe to the ground, or he pulls him to the ground.
