Coach John Marshall: Infielders are taught to throw the ball to the first baseman's chest; however, sometimes the ball is thrown into the dirt. If that's the case, it's the first baseman's job to pick that ball out of the dirt.

The first baseman should step in the direction of the throw; keep his glove down, and his opposite hand – his throwing hand – above the ball. That way, when the ball takes its short hop, the first baseman can look the ball into the glove and keep it there with his opposite hand.

Whether the throw is to the glove side, or to the backhand side, the first baseman should look the ball into his glove, meaning he should see the ball short hop into his glove and close it with his hand there to keep the ball in.
